Arts notes: Symphony orchestras close seasons with astounding programs | Virgina Gazette (article is behind a paywall)
“The Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra closed its current season last week with another highly creative program by music director Michael Butterman. The first half of the May 14 performance featured the highly acclaimed Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and three of his compelling works… Then came the world premiere of Dawn Avery’s ‘Secrets: A Tribute to the Brafferton Indian School,’ with narration concerning the history of the school and interpretive dance by the Leah Glenn Dance Theatre. Inspiring in all aspects. The evening closed with Dvořák’s ever familiar Symphony No. 9, ‘From the New World.’ Butterman’s take on this was filled with subtleties of interpretation not ordinarily heard and much appreciated for its detail and freshness. The WSO was on target throughout and brought excitement to the musical chestnut.”
